Bibliography

The Society tries to maintain a list of publications in and about Northumbrian Dialect.

Oliver Heslop’s ‘Bibliographical List of Works Illustrative of the Dialect of Northumberland’ was published in 1896.  It followed the example set by the English Dialect Dictionary, listing all manner of works relevant to Northumbria.

The Society in recent years has tried to maintain and update a  bibliography,  following in the footsteps of the English Dialect Society,  who in 1877  published a Bibliographical list of works known to be in dialect for each county.  We have converted it and added a contents page which you can view here.

Alternatively,  you can read the copy in the Internet Archive here.  It covers the country, so you may wish to skip to ‘Northumberland’

The NLS has also maintained a bibliography, built on the Heslop work.  At present, much of it is still in manuscript form, but will be available on line here as soon as we have a digital version.
