MP Ian Lavery Launches the Society’s new dictionary – A Northumbrian Wordhoard

WANSBECK MP Ian Lavery helped launch a dialect dictionary at Morpeth. The pitman turned parliamentarian was an ideal choice for the job, never having lost his own northern accent since being elected to Westminster in 2010. But he had to admit that he had had to temper it a little in order to make himself understood in the Commons, where regional dialects were sometimes seen as a source of amusement. Mr Lavery was speaking at the unveiling of A Northumbrian Wordhoard, a paperback dictionary featuring 1,250 of the most commonly used words in the Northumbrian dialect. Published by the Northumbrian Language Society, priced £10, it is a available from independent bookshops, Morpeth’s Chantry, and online at http://northumbrianlanguagesociety.co…
