Hon. Ald. Ellen Wake Mitchell OBE. (1908 – 2003)
Ellen was the first woman Deputy Lieutenant of Northumberland, and a stalwart of the Labour Party in the North East.
Bedlington born, she had a strong interest in politics. though her first career was as a teacher. Joining the Labour Party at 21, she became a county councillor In 1945, and subsequently chaired the council in the 50s and 60s. Her teaching background led to her chairing the education committee and in the early 80s was chairman of the council.
In 1977 she was awarded the OBE in recognition of her lifetime of service, eventually retiring from the council in 1985. Unusually, she was made an Honorary Alderman.
Ellen served as President of the NLS between 1987-1995, retiring due to illness.
