Peter Arnold 1944 –
Chairman of the Northumbrian Language Society from 1997 to 2019, he is adamant that dialects should change with those who speak them: “If young people are coming in and speaking in dialect and adding their own words to it and their own way of speaking, that’s fine. It just shows that dialect is moving on, like every other living language.” he is seen here after bringing back a cup from the National Dialect festival in 2013.
Peter Arnold first became a councillor in 1995, and was leader of the Liberal Democrats in Newcastle when they staged their shock defeat of Labour at the 2004 election. After his two years as leader from 2004-06 he served as Sheriff and Lord Mayor.
After moving to Hexham, Peter has also served as chair of the Hexham Constituency Association.
