Bibby Lecture given by Warren Maguire
This year’s annual lecture was delivered by Dr Warren Maguire, of Edinburgh University. He took as the basis of his talk Thomas Wilson’s famous poem The Pitman’s Pay and demonstrated how research taking known pronunciations can be extended by comparing the rhyme themes of the poem and the pronunciations that such schemes impose onto words that are nowadays more commonly heard only in ‘standard english.’
